A Simple 6-Step Plan You Need to Know to Reach All Your Goals

As many of you know, my personal development journey began a few years back when I was at a point of frustration professionally.  I desperately wanted out to be out of the golf business due to the long hours and working every weekend.  I had spent the better part of my adult life working at or managing golf courses.  I just couldn’t figure out what else I could or would want to do.

And this is a huge problem for a lot of people, especially those that feel like they are underachieving in life.  Many like me have made this statement, “I know I am meant for something better or greater than what I am doing, I just don’t know what it is.”  And it is at this place in life that can cause a tremendous amount of frustration, when in actuality it should be the most liberating experience ever!

For it is at this moment that you have the chance to be or do something extraordinary; you have the opportunity to completely reinvent yourself!

(***side note:  Many of you have emailed me about finding that thing in life to which you can have a burning desire.  My answer is not simple as I cannot help you find your desire.  I can say that I do not believe that every person has one single purpose or one single desire for their entire lives.

It is my opinion that desire and purpose can and will change as you move through life.  With that said, if you are struggling with finding desire or purpose, my advice is twofold: 1. take time to dig deep within yourself and remember your passion and/or 2. try many different things to awaken passion, desire and purpose inside you.  end side note***)

If you want to be a writer, but don’t know how, register for a class at your local community college.  Want to start a business, but don’t have the capital?  Start researching online about how to develop a business plan.  Even though you may not currently have all the tools or resources to jump right in to living your dream, you can begin to prepare yourself so when an opportunity presents itself, you are ready!

I call this building Positive Forward Momentum.

The concept of building Positive Forward Momentum is something we have touched on but have never covered at length.  I developed this mental approach to reach my goals when I was losing weight and transitioning to a healthier lifestyle.

My mind perceived losing weight as a snowball rolling down hill.  If I could link together multiple days of success, the power of those days combined would turn me into a goal achieving machine!

As my streak of success grew from one day of healthy eating to 30 days of healthy eating, my confidence grew.  And grew.  And grew.  And by the time that tiny snowball reached the bottom of the hill it was an avalanche of power, destroying all bad habits in its path!!

But, if you fail to take action now you will always be stuck where you are right now.  And your avalanche of snowball power will be a tee tiny little snowball barely big enough to knock over a 4 year old!

When you step out and do one thing that starts the ball rolling, it is amazing how the ball picks up positive energy and away you go.  I know it sounds like common sense but you have to take action to bring about change.  No one is going to do it for you.

One of my patterns that led to lots of incomplete tasks, abandoned business ideas, failed goal achievement was a lack of systematic thinking to help me move through the goal achievement process.  I had lots of great ideas and dreams, but I did not possess the knowledge or skill set necessary to carry out those visions.  This led to years of frustration.

My light bulb moment was reading and understanding Think and Grow Rich and the principles Hill espouses.  When I understood that nearly every self-made millionaire had used the same basic systematic thinking to get what they wanted, all of the confusion and frustration in my mind evaporated. It was my epiphany.  In one single moment goal attainment made complete sense to me.

I realized I was not trying to reinvent the wheel; all I had to do was follow the system of thinking that was already provided!  And I did.  And it worked!  Now Hill’s “map” was quite extensive and it was way too much for me to consume so I had to reduce it down to bite size pieces.

This is the 6-step process resulting  from my research:

  1. determine what it is that you want and state it by writing it down
  2. determine what you are willing to sacrifice to get what you want
  3. develop a persistent attitude
  4. have faith
  5. develop organized/specialized knowledge
  6. execute.

It is a known fact that all successful people have desire, faith and persistence; not some, but all!   Reaching your goals or changing your job or making more money or meeting that special someone all begins with you taking action.  You must determine what you want, determine your sacrifice, believe in it beyond any doubt, be persistent, get organized and then execute your plan.

    1. I agree. I have spent the better part of the last year reading everything I can find in the “personal development” niche. Honestly, I think gurus try to make it seem complicated to make themselves look hyper-intelligent.

    1. And it is an important fact to keep in mind. Too often people get upset or frustrated because they think they are supposed to be finding or discovering one certain thing. When in fact life is not like that for everyone.
