Sometimes All Any Person Needs to Succeed Is the Right Motivation

Two hikers see a bear coming down the mountain after them.  They both start running for their lives, but then one of them stops to put on his running shoes.  His friends says, “What are you doing? You can’t outrun a bear!”  His friend replies, “I don’t have to outrun the bear; I only have to outrun you!”

Sometimes all any person needs to succeed is the right motivation.  Motivation can be powerful.  I imagine if I had an obsession with cheeseburgers and I came to the knowledge that one more bite of a cheeseburger would cause me to be immediately vaporized, then I would avoid cheeseburgers at all cost.

It is for this reason that I don’t accept excuses easily.  When I hear a person using an excuse I wonder how their result would have been different had their motivation been different.

  1. Find ways, not excuses is my mantra. When I lived in a self-imposed victim mentality everything was someone else’s fault or an excuse on my behalf. Now that I’ve learned to accept responsibility and be 100% accountable to myself I find myself both incredibly motivated and rarely making excuses.

I love the moral of that story by the way. My dad told me that joke as a kid, at least as a kid I thought it was a joke… 😉
