Let me ask you a question:

In your opinion, is it ever okay to have a child in a bar around adults drinking alcohol?

  1. In the UK our pubs are mostly family orientated and tend to serve food. I don’t see anything wrong with having a beer or a glass of wine with your meal when the kids are there. Maybe its different in the US though? Hayley 😊

  2. It depends on the bar, I wouldn’t think so, normally. We don’t drink as a family, usually. Here the restaurants we go to serve drinks and the bar areas are separated a bit. There are plenty of “bar” bars, but if we go out it’s as a family. No one has time or energy to just go to a regular bar.

  3. I take my 4 year old to his favourite place from time to time. I always have pint of beer, Guinness or cider with my meal. However, it is a family friendly place… they even encourage dog owners to bring their dogs, offering free dog treats. I guess it depends on what type of ‘bar’ one is taking their child(ren) to.

  4. That’s a tricky one for me to answer. I grew up and live in a country where it’s totally normal. Personally I don’t think it’s the thing that makes that difference and makes them drink. It’s how you handle alcohol at home and what they see and experience there. In short: I’ve never thought it’s an issue. And in countries like Italy or Greece where wine is part of a healthy diet (if you want so) drinking seems to be not that much of an issue as it is in other countries. But the wine belongs to a meal. It’s not about drinking to drink. It’s part of being social and enjoying a meal and a gathering. I think that’s what makes a difference. It’s not about getting drunk. It’s about enjoying.

    • I can understand your view. Here are the issues I noticed the other day: it was incredibly loud, there was a lot of yelling and cursing (esp. eff bombs) and many drunk guys. It just didn’t seem like the place to bring a kid.

  5. I use to work in bars and clubs. In an actual pub with no food being served we had these 2 people come in. One had a child about age 9 and the other had a child about age 5 maybe 6. The amount of times I saw the parents leave really drunk with their child at 11/11.30pm made me so sad, but because the landlord allowed it, there was very little I could do, especially given I knew their first name and the rough whereabouts as to where they lived. I did try though
