My daughter and I celebrated our birthdays yesterday. I’m not big on celebrating my own but I was glad to celebrate hers. She turned 21.

Some of the decorations were mylar baloons filled with helium. I was in charge of their disposal. My first thought was to dispose of them into the dumpster. That is the correct and proper way to do it.

While I was thinking about how it might be difficult to keep them covered so they don’t fly out when I put them in the dumpster, this idea came in my head:

“Let them fly.”

As I watched them float up into the sky I felt a little guilty like I might be in trouble for littering but I also thought that it was the perfect end of my time with them. They floated away majestically and all I knew was they were free.
