    1. I guess my question is more existential. My follow-up is…but why us? Why humans? What is it that exists inside us that we have been artistic even since Neanderthal days?

      1. The old opposable thumb. Who would think the ability to touch the other fingers with the thumb would change the course of humanity. lol

      1. I believe so! Humans have been making art since the days of cave drawings. The only difference now is that we have access to the internet so that it’s easier than ever to learn about whatever art form we desire to pursue.

      1. Yes! Communication is a why. We must be able to communicate and when early man didn’t speak, they could still “talk” via a drawing. Love it!

    1. But why? lol The why is what perplexes me. Why do we have this thing inside us that drives us to paint or write or sing. Why do we express ourselves. We could just as easily be a species that does not.

  1. The best answer I know is in a very old story:

    The Scorpion and the Frog

A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the
scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back. The
frog asks, “How do I know you won’t sting me?” The scorpion
says, “Because if I do, I will die too.”

The frog is satisfied, and they set out, but in midstream,
the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of
paralysis and starts to sink, knowing they both will drown,
but has just enough time to gasp “Why?”

Replies the scorpion: “Its my nature…”

      1. I’m not sure if explode is the right word, but I think it would add undue stress to all of our relationships. I do believe there needs to be a personal outlet for creativity for everyone.

  2. I think artists create art ( music, painting, sculpture, prose, poetry) because they have to. Any artists I have known have done it because it has to come out of them. It is when they are creating that they feel truly alive.

      1. A bit of both. Not everyone has the compulsion to create or express themselves with art. Those that do must further develop it as they go along.

      1. Depends on the person. What I have hidden in my mind may be one you and others are willing to discuss. What vulnerable secrets I may be willing to divulge … may make people run screaming into the night. Vulnerabilities are unique and depend on the person.. Fortunately, the fact we are diverse keeps society running. Might not be pretty, but it keep chugging along. g

      1. I don’t think it would be lethal, but I do believe that some people would probably get really depressive if they were deprived of any way to express themselves through art. It might not kill them, but it certainly would affect them! Or so I think, but I am just me 😛

    1. Yes, and even early in the human timeline too. Paintings on cave walls show that early humans painted animals and scenes of daily life. It is amazing to me.

  3. There are many different reasons, but I believe Art is a form of communication for things that can’t be put into words. For instance, I write books and the characters do and say things I’m either unable or unlikely to carry out myself. The writing is an emotional and therapeutic outlet that allows me to express ideas and stories that were internal to me.
