Not sure, actually. But, once you have one, it’s unlikely you won’t have another. They become part of the family, give unconditional love, give companionship, they’re fun, they’re funny. Maybe I just answered the question after all. 😃
Many see pets as offering an unconditional love they find difficult or lacking in other humans. Also, they can be substitute children, especially considering that we seem to find baby animals irresistible in their cuteness. And, parents often get pets for children to help them learn responsibility and to care for them, and by extension other people.
Losing a pet is so difficult. Bentley is now 4. If he lives to the ripe old age of 15 that means we will only have him for another 11 or so. It will kill us to lose that little dog. He is our whole world.
Maybe for a different type of companionship — a type seldom found in humans… In the case of “dog as pets,” maybe its the unquestioned loyalty it gives us.
There is no definitive answer. To me, I often feel that the animals are domesticating us. We feel guilty leaving them home all day and spend as much time with them as we can. For example, I was across the street at the dog park 3 times today letting Miley run around as I felt bad she was stuck in for 3 days with rain.

It is so interesting how Bentley can look at me without saying anything and all I can see is love. It is as if he lives for Evelina and I.

I am glad humans learned to domesticate animals. Dogs bring so much love to the world.

Unconditional love. We had many pets but now it would be hard to care for one, expensive, and I don’t think I could deal well with losing one again.

I’ve met people who have no business having pets given the terrible way they take care of them

True, but what about those who reciprocate the love? Why do we need pets?

Pets give us so much joy and comfort. They’re always happy to see us and love us, no matter what. I miss my black lab, Buddy, SO much!

I think we are going to get another dog in a few years so if something should happen we aren’t solo.

That’s a good idea, plus the dogs will be good friends😊

Because then most of you tube wouldn’t exist :-p
I would say that it started with needing the animals for hunting and then like many other things morphed into something more

That is a good point. We developed bonds with our work animals.
