My Most Recent Health Scare Is No Joke

My Most Recent Health Scare Is No Joke…

It has been just over a week since I wrote anything and there is a good reason.  On Monday, 4/16, I had to have a colonoscopy conducted to check out some digestive issues I’ve been having for a couple months.  I thought I had some type of infection or bacteria due to some of my symptoms.

Once the procedure was over and they eliminated the possibility of cancer, I was informed that I have an incurable form of colitis, which is an infection of the large intestine.

The frustrating part of this deal is that I must manage the condition through my diet and the food restrictions are intense.  For instance, I cannot eat the following:

  • breads
  • cereals
  • pastas
  • noodles
  • macaroni
  • brown rice
  • quinoa
  • buckwheat
  • oats
  • wild rice
  • walnuts
  • hazelnuts
  • pecans
  • cashews
  • almonds
  • macadamia nuts
  • peanuts
  • pistachios
  • sesame seeds
  • flax seeds
  • millet
  • pine nuts
  • sunflower seeds
  • pumpkin seeds
  • wild rice
  • all beans, including chickpeas
  • adzuki beans
  • soy nuts, including soybeans and edamame
  • raw fruit
  • dried fruit
  • fruit that has seeds that can’t be removed (like most berries)
  • vegetables that have a skin
  • veggies that have seeds
  • raw veggies
  • dairy
  • corn
  • sulfides or sulfates
  • anything containing gluten
  • caffeine

And these are just a few of the things we have discovered thus far.  My doctor tells me that I’ll spend the next few months eating things in order to discover if it causes a flare up.  If it does then it goes on the banned list.

As you imagine I simply cannot eat out and if I do I have to eat plain chicken breast and green beans.

This is going to be an enormous challenge.  Evelina does our grocery shopping and it takes forever because we have to read every single ingredient on anything we buy.  A couple nights ago we went to Whole Foods and bought $50 worth of groceries.  That took us over an hour.  I guess what I’ll have to do is find the top 10 things I like and can eat and just stick to those to speed up this process.

All-in-all things could be worse I suppose.  I don’t have cancer which is an obvious relief, but the thought of dealing with this for the remainder of my life is a bit of a let-down to be quite honest.

  1. First of all Danny I am very happy for you that it is not cancer, but I can understand how frustrating it is to be stuck with forbidden foods, naturally you do not want to make a fuss and yet you can not avoid being strict about this. I guess if you stick to your plan that you mentioned that this will make things easier for you. I wish you strength.

  2. Gee, I hate to click “like” but wow, what an ordeal! Glad you do not have cancer! I have a good friend who suffers from diverticulitis and can’t eat many of the food you listed. Those little seeds are harsh fibers from raw veggies are detrimental and painful. Wishing you recovery and strength in figuring this out, Danny!

  3. What about altering some things you normally eat? My wife loves spaghetti but quit bread and pasta so now she uses spaghetti squash instead of pasta. Should look up fathead pizza crust and perhaps you can still eat pizza. Sorry to hear about this… I couldn’t imagine changing my diet so drastically.

    • I’m sure I’ll learn by trying things. But for now I have to keep everything limited to help the large intestine fight the inflammation. The only issue about introducing questionable things is if my body doesn’t like it, then I have to deal with tremendous pain.

  4. I am so sorry to see this. What a challenge you are faced with. But I hope that over time you will adjust to the eating and what is ok and what is not ok. I am a survivor of colorectal cancer and that was quite a journey. We all have to be survivors Danny. I’m sending you positive thoughts!

  5. Thank you for sharing. My BFF is going through this and it has been difficult. To help you, she has went through the process for a year now and went back to eating a lot of foods such as vegetables and fruits. Nuts still bothers her. I wish you health and a full recovery.

  6. Sorry to hear this, it must seem overwhelming to know that so many foods are not good for your condition. As I read your list, I wondered what you are able to eat that wouldn’t cause a flare up. I hope you find the foods that are good, and that you enjoy. And that the pain goes away and stays away! Take care Danny🙂

    • Thus far I eat 1 scrambled egg with enriched flour toast. I will eat a Vega bar with white rice for lunch with plain chicken breast. And for dinner I’ve been eating a lean protein with asparagus or green beans. I probably going to eliminate animal products completely and go Vegan.

      • Sounds so restrictive. But hopefully after finding out what foods affect you and which ones don’t, you’ll have a good variety. My sister has digestive issues and has been eating Vegan for a few years now. She’s doing great with it and is used to all the restrictions. Best of luck to you, Danny!

  7. How awful for you but on a positive like you said it could be worse. I am sure once you know the foods that are ok for you, you can improvise and make up your own recipes. Wishing you strength to overcome this step. x

  8. Sometimes all you can do is just shake your head and say, “Really.” It gets old when you have to count your blessings over and over again because you didn’t get the cancer card. Would be nice to hear someone won the lotto and can do anything they want to. I’m sorry Mr. Danny, but I’m glad you didn’t get the cancer card and I wish you would’ve won the lotto i.e. power ball or mega…You look young so I’m thinking they will manage this awful disease better and better everyday. My poor little nephew got this when he was a young man and I’m pretty sure that was a hard thing to deal with…I’m going to send you good wishes and prayers. Everything is going to be okay 😉

Good luck Danny. I am in the midst of changing my diet due to a gluten sensitivity. After reading this list, I will stop complaining. 😉
I wish you luck…but from what I know about you and your determination, I’m confident that you will become a pro at this in no time.

  11. It feels weird to press like on this post. But I do it because I think you have something important to say. I hope you find a new way of eating. I did change my eating a little a while ago just by curiosity. I didn’t felt sick or bad before that change, but the change actually made me feel better and stronger. So I hope you will find a way that leads to something good 🙂

  13. Try healing through Ayurvedic food. Heal your intestine through the food you eat. For example Tumeric is a very good. It is a potent anti-inflammatory. It can heal you. So try adding it into your diet. It is my kind advice to you dear. Try it out.

  14. I’m so sorry you have to deal with this. It is a blessing that you don’t have cancer but this is and will be quite a challenge. My husband also has digestive issues that will be around for the rest of his life. I look forward to the time when we’ll be healed of all sicknesses in God’s Kingdom (Isaiah 33:24; Revelation 21:4). Until then may you continue to count your blessings and take this ordeal one day at a time.
