MEET RICK JOHNSON

lucinda E Clarke

My guest today is one of the very first I met on Facebook and he has been one of my most supportive friends. We have the same sense of humour and all Rick’s books are funny and off the wall. He’s written a wide range of quirky novels, including talking dogs who operate in gangs, the topsy-turvy world of black plantation owners employing white slaves, to a man who loves his vacuum cleaner. You never know quite what to expect when you open one of Rick’s books.

Instead of a photo of the author, here is the Dog – his owner is very shy. Over to you:

I decided to enter the world of writing a few years ago because I knew I couldn’t spend all of my time eating banana Moon Pies and waiting for Sandra Bullock to wake up one day and deciding that she was head over…

Words Our Inner Child Needs to Hear

Diary of a Recovering Codependent

My little sister was a nanny for 2 precious little girls who are turning 4 years old. She decided to write them a letter and shared it with me. I am sharing it on my blog (with her permission) because it touched me so deeply. My little sis is wise beyond her years. It is written in such a way that I “feel” the love in her words to these little girls and when they get older, I know they will “feel” it too.

“How do you spell ‘love’?” – Piglet
“You don’t spell it…you feel it.” – Pooh

For me, it is a reminder to speak to my inner child on days that I just don’t feel that I am enough. It is advise I wish I was given when I was a child and advise that is still relevant for me as an adult. I know so many people…

3 Rejection Letters Indie Authors Receive

The PBS Blog

I didn’t intend on posting again today but one of my favorite authors posted something to her IG that sparked something I had to share. As you see above, this author is Bernice McFadden and this is her sharing the rejection letters she received for her novel Sugar. I have this book as well as her novels This Bitter Earth, Glorious and I’d like to get my hands on Nowhere is a Place and The Book of Harlan but I digress. Needless to say, the writing is on point. Long story short, you all know that Sugar has gone on to do very well despite the 75 (yes, seventy-five…let that settle) rejection letters. For Indie Authors, we may not be looking for publishers, but we have rejection letters too. I want to encourage you not to give up when you get one:

Put On Your Armor

2 R Better Than 1

Good Monday morning, friends! It’s so good to be among the living, and that means that you’re still in the fight of your lives. You already know the enemy’s MO — to kill, steal, and destroy. Here’s how we counter his strategy and fight:

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.14 Stand firm then, with the belt…

Update: Why I Blog the Way I Blog: The Method to My Madness

Blogging-spock-funny-blogging-meme

I thought it would be nice to provide a little updated information for those that are new to Dream Big as we have added a quite a few new followers to the blog in the last couple of weeks AND my page strategy has changed a little.

What is Dream Big, Dream Often All About?

I focus our conversations around 4 basic topics, all of which have to do with personal development: living a healthy lifestyle, living an organized/goal oriented life, living debt-free and living a life of charity.  I call these the 4 Pillars of Successful Living.

Along with these 4 topics I believe in and use a 6-step formula for helping me to achieve goals:

  1. determine what it is that you want and state it
  2. determine what you are willing to sacrifice to get what you want,
  3. develop a persistent attitude,
  4. have faith,
  5. develop organized planning and
  6. execute.

Because of this formula I will often discuss desire, developing persistence, having faith developing a plan, executing the plan and successful habits.

What Is the Posting Schedule on Dream Big?

Mondays – A Few of My Random Thoughts

Tuesdays – Healthy Living Update

Wednesdays – Dream Big Original

Thursdays – Blogging Tips, Advice and Blog Strategy

Friday-Sunday  I will post on topics within the niche of personal development.

On the 2nd and 4th weekend of every month I conduct a Meet and Greet

Each night at 6 pm est, I publish my Featured Blogger segment in which I feature 10 bloggers that have left a link to their page or post on my Let Me Share Your Page post.  I share as a way to give back to the blogging community.  This segment replaces my previous practice of reblogging.  I found reblogging had 2 negative impacts on my page: 1. it distracted from my overall message, and 2. it cluttered up people’s inboxes.

I don’t stray from this schedule so you can expect a post each morning at 6pm est.

I hope this helps some of the new folks to understand my blogging strategy.  I believe every blogger needs to have some type of formula that works for them other than “build it and they will come.”

I thought it would be nice to provide a little information structure for those that are new to DBDO as we have added hundreds of new followers and readers to the blog in the last couple of weeks AND my page strategy has changed a lot since December.

I not only espouse these, I live them.

I focused on these 4 because my research revealed that these are the 4 basic areas that were common among people who considered themselves unsuccessful or under-achieving.

Along with these 4 topics I believe in and use a 6-step formula for helping me to achieve any goal:

  1. determine what it is that you want and state it
  2. determine what you are willing to sacrifice to get what you want,
  3. develop a persistent attitude,
  4. have faith,
  5. develop organized planning and
  6. execute.

Because of this formula I will often discuss desire, developing persistence, having faith developing a plan, executing the plan and successful habits.

What Is the Posting Schedule on Dream Big?

My posting schedule works as follows: a Dream Big Original at 6am est followed by supporting materialsIMG_7127 such as memes, quotes, reblogs and article shares.  I recycle posts throughout the day to keep things fresh and new.

At 6 pm est, I publish my Featured Blogger segment in which I feature 10 bloggers that have left a link to their page or post.  I share as a way to give back to the blogging community.  This segment replaces my previous practice of reblogging.  I found that the reblogging had 2 negative impacts on my page: 1. it distracted from my overall message, and 2. it cluttered up people’s inboxes.

Lastly, on the 2nd and 4th weekend of every month I conduct a Meet and Greet which allows all bloggers the opportunity to leave a link on my page and meet and find new followers.  This is a great way for others to gain exposure for their page.

I hope this helps some of the new folks to understand my blogging strategy.  I believe every blogger needs to have some type of formula that works for them other than “build it and they will come.”
