You Want It?

I love this post. If you have spent more than a couple months reading my posts then it will seem like you have read this before. Because I scream it at the top of my lungs every time I talk about money. Read the words and get specific about what it is that you want from life!!!!!!!

Getting what you want is not difficult.

Let me say that again, “Getting what you want is not difficult.”

The problem, for most people, is not the process of reaching their goal and getting what they want.  The problem is in knowing what it is they want.  What is IT?

Society has convinced far too many that what we should want is more: more material possessions, more money, more time. The problem with more is that you can never truly obtain more.  It is the same concept as saying you want tomorrow. You can never obtain tomorrow because it is always today.  No matter how many material possessions you own, there will always be more that you could own.  The same is true of money.  Time, on the other hand, is entirely different yet just as equally unattainable.  You can never have more time.  You can…

What do You Want

This line is one that expresses my belief in having anything you want..”If you want to move in life in general then speak in general, but if you want to live in life successfully then speak in specific things.” Remember my first step? Determine what you want and state it to the universe! Be specific. This is an awesome post.

Ever wondered what you really want in life? Some people will say they want houses whilst some will speak of happiness yet in real essence most people do not really know what they want.

Most people are unhappy because they speak in general and hence have no idea what exactly they want in life. If you ask a person what they want in life the most likely answer is that they want to be happy. Happiness is a good thing but how many people actually know what it means to be happy or what is required? As children we are taught that once we grow up our dreams will come true and we will be happy. The problem with those expectations is that they never really identify what is happiness and where it comes from. In the end we have married people around us who just don’t get why happiness…

Rising from a Stumbling Block

When you set your mind on a goal, there will be many opportunities to quit. Perseverance is what keeps you going and helps you realize how strong you truly are.

Potential Doctor

I am not concerned that you have fallen — I am concerned that you arise” Abraham Lincoln

When working towards a goal, there will be moments when you may hit a stumbling block. I had a moment like this last Friday when I learned that one of the medical schools I had applied to sent out their interview invites…but I did not receive an invitation. There were only 5 spots available at this medical school for an out-of-province applicant like me. Still, I was really hoping to get a positive response from this school.

I haven’t officially received a rejection and there is still hope that an invitation could come if someone else declines their interview. But somehow the news hit me harder than I expected. In fact, it felt like I hit a brick wall and my confidence in my abilities plummeted.  I decided that I had to tackle my state…

6 Steps That Will Give You the Life of Your Dreams

So a few years back I was at a point of frustration professionally as I desperately wanted out to be out of the golf business.  I was really tired of the long hours and working every weekend and just wanted out.  I had spent the better part of my adult life working at or managing a golf course.  I just couldn’t figure out what to do.

And this is a huge problem for a lot of people, especially those that feel like they are underachieving in life.  Many like me have made this statement, “I know I am meant for something better or greater than this, I just don’t know what it is.”

And it is at this place in life that can cause a tremendous amount of frustration when in actuality it should be the most liberating experience ever!  For it is at this moment that you have the chance to be or do something extraordinary; to reinvent yourself!

desire-is-the-starting-point-of-all-achievement-not-a-hope-not-a-wish-but-a-keen-pulsating-desire-which-transcends-everything-napoleon-hillIf you want to be a writer, but don’t know how, register for a class at your local community college.  Want to start a business, but don’t have the capital?  Start researching online about how to develop a business plan.  If you fail to take action now in order to take advantage of future opportunities you will always be stuck where you are right now!!

I call this building Positive Forward Momentum.

When you step out and do one thing that starts the ball rolling.  Taking a typing class in order to get a job as a personal assistant is a way of building Positive Forward Momentum.  Eating healthy food in order to lose weight to run a half marathon is building Positive Forward Momentum.  It is amazing how the ball picks up positive energy and away you go.  I know it sounds like common sense but you have to take action in your life to bring about change.  No one is going to do it for you.

When I read Napoleon Hill’s book Think and Grow Rich it changed the way my mind perceived the world around me.  I learned that there are unspoken laws that exist and that many of the world’s most successful people use them to get what they want.  The formula is simple, but the hard work involved is not.

Here is the formula:

  1. Determine what it is that you want and state it
  2. Determine what you are willing to sacrifice to get what you want,
  3. Develop a persistent attitude,
  4. Have faith,
  5. Develop organized planning and
  6. Execute.

I have read biographies and autobiographies of some of the most successful inventors, business people, writers and politicians.  I can tell you without question that everyone single one of them exhibited these traits while achieving their success.

For me personally I used this plan to lose a ton of weight.  I have also used this formula to grow this blog, book speaking engagements and build the Dream Big brand.  Currently, I am using this formula to write my book.

What you must understand is that I was not always the man of action you read about through the posts here on Dream Big.  I was once a wisher of dreams not a doer of dreams.  I would sit around and think up great ideas and never do anything about them.  I wished to own my own business, but never did.  I wished to be famous, but never did.  I hoped to be a successful golfer, but never did.

Find something simple that you have desire for and apply this formula and get it.  It could be something as simple as saving up to buy something or as monumental as getting a promotion.

I can still hear the words of Hill, “Desire is the starting point of all achievement, not a hope, not a wish, but a keen pulsating desire which transcends everything.”

You can turn your desire into a tangible, real thing that can be held, felt and experienced!!

How to Find Your Creative Spark and Ignite Your Life!

Several years ago I remember having a conversation with a friend about food.  What types of exotic foods we had eaten, which were our favorites and what we disliked.  I recall my part of the conversation being short as it has only been in recent years that I have moved off of the southern delights of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, fried okra and corn; on the cob or off!

But what is so vivid in my memory for some reason is my friends challenge to me to step out and try new things. And it was out of that conversation that I realized that I loved broccoli. I had spent the majority of my adult life explaining to people when presented with the veggie that I didn’t like it. I can’t recall why I didn’t like broccoli nor why I had never tried it since I was a kid.

And as a matter of fact the memory of first tasting it and deciding I didn’t like it escapes me. But none the less I had decided in my mind that I did not like broccoli therefore broccoli was not a food option.  I am thankful now that many years ago I tried broccoli and realized I loved it as now it is one of my favorite vegetables.

This veggie situation got me to thinking about the dilemma that some have when starting to design a life of success.  Step one is deciding on what you want, what you have desire for, and stating it to the universe.  But how do you begin when you don’t know what you have desire for?

So here’s my answer: you have to experiment in life to determine what might release desire in your heart. Just as I stepped out and gave broccoli a new place in my life, you must be open to new things in order to find passion and desire!  Until I started writing I did not realize how much I loved it.  It has become more than something to do, often times it is my therapy, my release from stress. It releases in me a creative juice that permeates all parts of my life.  I think we treat our life sometimes like I treated broccoli. We don’t know what we will like because we close ourselves off to the opportunities!

There is true desire and passion inside of every single human being. Some have a desire to serve and help people. Some have a desire for business and money. Some have a desire to write. Some have a desire to draw. Some have a desire to fly. What you must do is retrain your thinking, start saying yes to more experiences in life that will open up the creative spark inside of you and awaken your desire. (If you haven’t watched Yes Man starring Jim Carey do so).  Think of life as a Chinese buffet bar.

And when you are standing in front of that buffet bar with your empty plate don’t go automatically to the things that you already know you like.  Fill your plate up with things that you have never tasted before or have passed over.  I am going to promise you some of those items on that plate you very well may not like. But, you may find one new item that you had never given the opportunity before and it may become your new favorite Chinese buffet bar item!

There is such a big, beautiful world in which we live, full of amazing and spectacular things to do and experience.  Yet, we sit in our cubicle and type away.  And that might be okay for work, but that is not okay for LIFE!!

from the movie Office Space

from the movie Office Space

Life was not meant to be lived in a cubicle. And many of us struggle with desire because our life has become so normal and ordinary, that we haven’t taken the time to expand ourselves by expanding our life experiences! Our routines have numbed us to the amazing world we live in; and many of us live with dying spirits.

So, step one to developing desire is to get outside of your “world.”  Go to the park and kick a ball, experience being a kid again by finger painting, make a mess, cut your own hair, take a picture, paint a picture, skip a stone, go fishing, fly a kite, get grass stains on your jeans, play in the rain, lay in the grass and watch clouds, go hiking….Scream at the top of your lungs and sing a song.

Break that shell and declare yourself to the world!  Once you have awakened the creative spark, finding your passion is right around the corner!

Just a thought for a Thursday morning…

Personal Mastery

Unknown-4I appreciate this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson; I’m not sure if anyone could say it better: Success is…..

“To laugh often and much. To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children. To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty. To find the best in others. To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition. To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived……This is to have succeeded.”

images-6Typically when we aren’t feeling successful its because we forgot to include an understanding that the journey to success will be a wild and bumpy ride.

Often times, when our plan bumps up against reality, we give up.  We tell ourselves: It’s too hard! This wasn’t supposed to have happened! This must be life telling me I’m wrong!  In other…

Failure Is Forerunner of Success – A Conceptual Critique

Meet Effective Thoughts!!

Effective Thoughts

Two words which haunt and attract all and sundry, day and night, are failure and success, respectively. We proposed that failure is not fate; rather, a perishing scene and success is not a destination; instead, a continuous journey. Moreover, the two wings of a successful flight of human struggle are a positive mindset and wise working approach. By following these effective attitudes, one can achieve the highest level of success i.e. good health, inner satisfaction, recognition and position.
